Carbohydrate Absorption

This is the last of the carbohydrate Infographic. This picture will tell you how the carbohydrate remains absorbed into the body. It occurs in our small intestine where there's million of villi will brush against the food material. It one of the contact, there's bound for some food to be absorbed into it.

I hope you enjoyed the infographic, the reason I made it without colour is because... I suck at coloring.
Well, I will try next time. See ya. :)

Carbohydrate Digestion

This is my second infographic, digestion of carbohydrate inside our body. As I mentioned before in previous post, there are actually a lot more information about digestion than what is wrote here. However, the one I put here is just the essential part. Should I included all, it will be bigger than this (1600x1400) size.

I'm now reading about food processing as well. I will tried to make some infographic base on what I learned. You need to wait for that. Oh, and I forgot, Merry Christmas to all of you! and Happy Holidays!

Wait for my next infographic, I will post it this week too.

Carbohydrate Basic Fact

This is my first time trying to do an official Infographic. It is about Carbohydrate: the basic fact. This is just one of few infographic I made. I hope you learned something from it. Note that I just downloaded a free software (freeware) for drawing chemical structures; called ACD/Chemskecth. It's great for those lecturers or researchers wanted to draw chemical struture of their own and paste it on their research paper. You can download it from ACDLabs (please ask Mr. Google about it)

what shown in the infographic is just the basic information about carbohydrate, that I categories into 4 sections; What is it? Forms, Origin and Classification. I think if you understand tehse information, you'll do well in your studies.

NExt infographic will also be posted this week. Stay tuned!

Guy Kawasaki's Artisanal Publishing

Guy Kawasaki
This month had been a busy month for me, but nevertheless, I got the chance to review Guy Kawasaki's newest book; APE; Author, Publisher, Entrepeneur - How to Publish a Book

This book is also the first book I read entirely in my newest phone; Samsung Galaxy Y.(yes, it's a small screen, but I'm still a student, need to use money on more important things). The book is in Pdf format, so, I put it in my phone and read it whenever I can; (during walking to my lecture hall, during waiting for a meal). Of course it's dangerous to walking blindly (chances of headbutting a lamp post rise significantly; been there done that) but I cannot help but eager to know how to publish a book *Something that I aspire to do* especially from Guy Kawasaki and also from Shawn Welch (You will know him by reading the book)
Shawn Welch

In Malaysia, I think Guy is not so popular here (as well as other people form the silicon Valley, except Steve Jobs (deceased) and Bill Gates) but I know him from his book when I took an entrepeneur subject (the subject was supervised by the STEVENS's Institue of Technology, Thank you Dr. Gary Lind!). The book was The Art of Start. Of course, some of the story he writes and talk (courtesy of Youtube Videos) was mainly for technology and computer products (which sometimes dazzled me, since I know nothing about computer programming let alone building one) But what I do know is that I have something that I can show and give to the people. This is something that Guy also advocate; how to convey message and values to the people effectively (and at lower cost)

In APE, he and Shawn wrote on how to make a book passionately and distribute the love all around effectively (termed Artisanal Publishing). The goal here is on how to make a high-quality-not-amateurish book that can be sold and distribute to customer globally (APE show this)  untill either you can sell the rights to a publisher or continue to self publish (your choice).

Truth to be told, when I was reading this book, I never thougt the book was also going to give me detailed explaination and guides. Some of the self-publishing company in the web, the format of the book, how to write and even the styles intricacy in the several word processor, is discussed and explained throughout in APE. In other word, beside worrying about the content of the book, you also need to worry about the every-detail-in-your-book.Which is good. This because I actually learned a lot of things from APE. Sometimes you lost me, Guy, but thank you so much for that.( I had to make some further reading to understand what you write; like I said I'm no computer whiz, and I'm not an Ipad Owner, let alone an Iphone. The samsung Galaxy Y was my first android phone.)

From APE as well, the habit of reading books in Ipads and Androids seems norm (sorry, I never heard of kindle before in Malaysia, I only knew after I read your book, Guy) in the west. In Malaysia, the reading habits here were poor for traditional books, let alone E-books. However, android and Ipads where everywhere and they were used only for basic function only (calls, messaging, and play games etc.) The extra capabilities such as reading were ignored (except for middle-age people; I always see they reading newspaper using Ipads) After reading APE, I am more determined to make an E-book in my language; Bahasa Malaysia for my fellow country men. I am determined to increased they reading habits. Thank you once again Guy Kawasaki and Shawn Welch.

What affect it Our Nutrient Absorption? part 2

We continue with what affect our nutrient absorption in our body, well, in this part, we be talking about our body a whole lot more.

4.Body Nutritional Requirement

Cute Dr. Park
As we know, our body has it needs, in form of nutrient of course. The nutrient requirement differ by sex, age, physical activity, pregnancy, and enviroment. For example, A woman need 800 mg of calcium per day (According to Malaysia's RNA guide; RNA stands for Recomended Nutrient Intake) during her youth untill adult age. But when come the Golden age or mid life, the requirement increase up to 1000 mg of calcium. This is because as we get old, our bones aren't what it used to be. the calcium is needed more in order to strengthen what's left of it. This is needed more so if there's a history of bone fractured involved.

Well, in actuality, the RNA is just a guideline (In Malaysia; RNA. In America; RDA.. the nutrient requirement stated in each guideline is not the same due to some different in people between these 2 country but the function for both these guideline are same) The "REAL" body requirement is actually based on your condition. Beside the factor mention aboved (Read the BOLD word), the nutrient intake also increase when you're sick or fatigue. That's why doctors give your specific medicine when your sick. The medicine is actually a supplement of nutrient that you may had loss during the sick. (the doctors ask your symptoms and make a conclusion on what nutrient you're lacking)

Well, if you're fond of the drama series HOUSE, (will there be season 9?) you see that the Dr. House and his diagnostic team (Dr. park is cute) find symptoms of the patient. It may be whether some organ inside the body system had dysfunction or some pathogen attacking the body. Some of the medicine given were actually some form of direct-complex Nutrient (the nutrient we consumed is actually a general one, which will be degrade into more complex inside our body) so that the body can digest and absorb it easily, maintaining some of the body system which will give them time for the team to figure out what's wrong with the patient.

5. Your body composition
Fat vs skinny

In this case, I meant your body condition. Are you fat? or skinny? Well, this actually affect your nutrient intake. For example, there are 2 type of vitamins (water-soluble and fat-soluble) If you have some fat, the fat-soluble vitamin can be stored inside your body but if you're skinny, carrying less fat, you will storing less amount of fat-soluble vitamin. Beside vitamin, other nutrient also needed fat to carry out its function. for example is carbohydrate. Beside giving energy, it also used in forming your skin. One of the component is glycolipid; a combination of lipid and carbohydrate.

That's why anorexia is detrimental to health. Besides the hunger, your body actually are not working at optimum efficiency. This does not meant that I advocate fattyness (is that a word?) is just that, you must eat all type of food, so that you're getting all the nutrient that you need.

So, that's it, that's the 5 factor that affect the nutrient absorption in our body. I hope you're enjoy the post and feel free to comment. about house, Dr. park or anything

What affect Our Nutrient Absorption? part 1

We were always told on to eat more nutritious food, for our nutritional needs and our nutritional life. The word nutritous had become a "fad" word and this make me sick. Well, the advise were true but not all the food we eat will be nutritious to us. some may just pass along our body without being absorbed. You see, there's certain requirement for the nutrient to be absorbed. Some of it were listed below:

1. Characteristic of the nutrient
Some of the nutrient have specific characteristic; such as vitamin.
In vitamins, there are 2 main characteristic; fat-soluble vitamin and water soluble vitamin.
The fat-Soluble vitamin were Vitamin A,D,E and K. These vitamin work well and will be absorbed if you eaten with a food that contain fat or you have your own fat. (hehe)

Why so? because the the vitamin does not work on-the-spot. It will need to be stored first, before it was utilized. In this case, due to it's fat-soluble properties, it need fat to hang out before it was called.

2. The form of the nutrient
vit a
Beside characteristic, some nutrient had an active form. For example, vitamin A, is not it's true form. Vitamin A is just a facade of its true nature... The true form (actually we use the term active form here) depend on where it goes. refer vit a diagram.

When we consume vitamin A, we can say there's 2 active form; retinal and retinol. (Reader:retina....wait a minute, that's our eyes... Me:Yes, vitamin A is good for eyes.) When vitamin A is not in used, it changed to Retinol. and when needed, it changed to retinal.

what is it have to do with our body? well, the body need the "things" that make it changes. In consuming vitamin A, it will change to Retinal, only when there's carotenoid around and cleavage-inducing compound around as well. So, you can say that if you want the nutrient, you cannot only eat one thing, you need to eat many things beside that, in order for the nutrient to be absorbed.

So, an advice to akid not eating to the pea would be "eat your peas, as well as your brocolli, carrot, meat, chicken, juice etc."

3. Our health
Our health is also an important factor to absorbing nutrient. The key is this, the enzymes and compound in our body are fragile. What a hot temperature to us may be a blazing inferno temperature to them. So, when you're down with a flu, the enzyme compound inside would be dying from the inferno temp. of the flu.

Without these enzyme compounds, some of the nutrient may not utilized fully, and thus absorption decreased.

Will be continue to part 2.
